Dat emoties een praktisch nut hebben is overduidelijk. Ze waren/zijn noodzakelijk in heel de evolutie van de mens. Het is voor mij niet voor de hand liggend om amusement/humor te classeren als emotie. Anderzijds vraag ik me toch af of er niet een praktische kant zit aan humor. In dit abstract insinueert de auteur dat dat niet het geval is. Welke argumenten gebruikt hij om dat aan te tonen? Hebben we humor/amusement dan helemaal niet nodig? Ik meen ergens gelezen te hebben dat Aristoteles al zei dat humor van pas kan komen bij het redeneren. Dat zal ik eens opzoeken.

"The thesis of this book is that neither laughter nor humor can be understood apart from the feeling that underlies them. This feeling is a mental state in which people exclude some situation from their knowledge of how the world really is, thereby inhibiting seriousness where seriousness would be counterproductive. Laughter is viewed as an expression of this feeling, and humor as a set of devices designed to trigger it because it is so pleasant and distracting. Beginning with phonetic analyses of laughter, the book examines ways in which the feeling behind the laughter is elicited by both humorous and nonhumorous situations. It discusses properties of this feeling that justify its inclusion in the repertoire of human emotions. Against this background it illustrates the creation of humor in several folklore genres and across several cultures. Hier worden twee thema's die me enorm boeien, namelijk humor en emotie (gevoel), samen behandeld. Wat zou de link kunnen zijn tussen lachen, als uiting van een gevoel, en humor als dat gevoel er kan zijn in zowel humoristische en niet-humoristische situaties? Ik ben benieuwd hoe deze auteur het gamma (repertoire) emoties bepaalt of afbakent. Wat is zijn definitie van een emotie en van een gevoel? Maakt hij een onderscheid tussen die twee begrippen? Gevoel situeert zich, volgens mij, op een "hoger" bewuster niveau dan een emotie, wat eerder een puur fysiologisch gebeuren is. Waar past humor in dit geheel? Humor of lachen kan een uiting van een gevoel zijn, maar het kan ook gevoelens of emoties opwekken, lijkt mij. Waarschijnlijk is er sprake van 2-richtingsverkeer.
