"Witty men are good company, both because they can make good jokes and pleasantries and because they can be amused by the onse we make. This can be taken to far, of course, if you make jokes that break the bounds of good taste, as buffoons do. Aritotle is quite careful to respect the limits of good taste, preffering innuendo to indecancy in his entertainments, and suggesting that there should perhaps be laws prohibiting jokes on certain topics. Most men are overinclined to amusement, and "the ridiculous side of things is not far to seek", but on the other hand there are some unpolished and uncivilized men who contribute nothing to the pleasure of social life and cannot be amused. Ethiek als richtlijn voor het goede leven. Hoe moet men leven om een goed mens te zijn? Bij Aristoteles hoort geestig zijn daar blijkbaar bij. "Witty" kan vertaald worden als geestig én als verstandig of wijs. Wellicht gaan beide betekenissen samen voor Aristoteles. Geestig zijn is een teken van beschaving, zolang de geestigheid binnen de grenzen van de goede smaak blijft.
Wie bepaalt dan wat goede smaak is?
